GLR - King of the Rock

posted May 16, 2013, 7:03 PM by Mark Woods

The 12th Annual King of the Rock Cadet Initiative is scheduled for 9 - 11 August 2013 at the Rock Cut State Park in northern Illinois.

Registration is due by AUGUST 1. Cost is just $10 per member for the entire weekend.

The King of the Rock is a fun competition between Civil Air Patrol teams. Teams are made up of 6 cadets plus a seventh member which will be inducted into each team on Saturday morning. The team that wins will have the honor of being named ‘King of the Rock’ and will have possession of the Eagle traveling trophy until the next competition. In addition, each team member (including the senior member) of the winning team will receive the ‘King of the Rock’ challenge coin.

This is a Camping event. All members that attend (including senior members) will need to bring appropriate camping supplies to last two days and two nights. Each team will participate in a series of up to 10 challenges. The teams will be graded on effectiveness of their teamwork, completion of the task, and esprit de corps. On Saturday evening the teams will cook a‘Formal Dinner’ for their team members. This dinner will be judged on creativity, quality of food, and presentation.

Although The Rock is more informal than an encampment, the cadets will be expected to maintain appropriate customs and courtesies throughout the event. Senior members will be asked to help in the judging of the challenges. The challenges will take place on Saturday from 0900 through 1530. The events will take place along the trail in the forest. Please be prepared with water, bug spray and sunscreen.

More information, including the registration and packing lists, are on the website.

Update on CAP Congressional Gold Medal Effort

posted May 16, 2013, 6:33 AM by Frank Blazich   [ updated May 16, 2013, 6:34 AM ]

To All Ohio Wing Members,

Senators Brown and Portman have co-sponsored S. 309 and now the bill has 79 cosponsors overall in the Senate, more than enough support for passage (http://capmembers.com/cap_national_hq/goldmedal/ ).  Now the effort turns to the House, where 135 more cosponsors for H.R. 755 are needed. Ohio currently only has four House cosponsors: Representatives Latta, Johnson, Stivers, and Turner.  If your House representative is not currently cosponsoring H.R. 755, please contact them.  A suggested letter tailored to the Ohio Wing can be found here: http://www.ohwg.cap.gov/home/capcongressionalgoldmedaleffortneedsyourhelp  or you can contact them via email or telephone at their Washington or Ohio offices. Let us keep the momentum going and ensure this high honor is rightfully bestowed on the CAP veterans of World War II.
